Scene from Fifth Ward [Photo by Caitlin Ann]

Houston by Dart Board

Mount a map of Harris County on the wall. Throw a dart at it. Photograph the little map quadrant where the dart lands — not with the idea of necessarily taking pretty pictures but to document what the area looks like. That was Paul Hester’s assignment to his Rice University photography students last Spring.

The students posted their photographs to Flickr and I selected out a few with special permission. Click the map links for their other photographs.

Wow, that photo of the creek in the Fifth Ward could go in a nature-themed bank calendar. That is not what I think of when I think Fifth Ward. Good eye!

I liked how the dart approach is like a randomized survey of land uses. So many of the pictures show factories and warehouses. If you just live and work in the Montrose-Heights-West U-Downtown area, you can easily forget that Houston is an industrial city. But then, as Harbeer says, there’s a nature shot or bucolic scene right there too.

I also love the University Place picture of the buckling sidewalks. You can just see how the roots suck up the water and cause the ground to subside. It’s like a sound wave in broken concrete.

Like it more than Houston It’s Worth It because it includes more than Montrose and the Heights…Great system to really open your eyes to the city. Comp teachers could employ it as well…
